We're Always Looking for a few Good
Troopers!
Why join? "The Horse Guards presents an opportunity to participate in
one of the country's oldest and most unique military organizations - a vital part
of our state and national history - where people, regardless of career and background, come together to ride in the cavalry tradition
and promote patriotism and sense of community at events statewide." - PFC
Tara Stapleton, class of 2006
Men and women interested in becoming members
of our troop should stop in or call (860) 673-3525 any Thursday night between

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I have to have a military
background?
A: Prior military experience is helpful, but not
necessary. We will train you!
Q: What about riding experience?
A: No prior horsemanship experience needed! We will
train you. We will teach you military balanced-seat riding on our troop
horses, using authentic turn-of-the-century McClellan saddles. Even if you
have some riding experience, we ride traditional cavalry maneuvers that will no
doubt be new to you and offer you a new challenge.
Q: Are there any other restrictions I should know about?
| A: We welcome men and women between the ages of 18 and 50 (exceptions are sometimes made up to age 55 for those with prior military background). You should be in good health and you must expect moderate physical activity, the type of work that goes along with handling large animals (such as moving bales of hay). You must also have a clear understanding of the time commitment becoming a volunteer member of this organization entails (see next question). Applicants must comply with the Department of the Army Height/Weight Requirements. Applicants should expect to work outside in all temperatures, both for mounted activities and to perform necessary horse care. | ![]() |
Q: Can you describe the time
commitment expected?
A: The troop drills every Thursday night from 7:00pm to 11:00pm and has other details, such as parades and in-house events, several times a month.
Other duties require additional time, such stable coverage and preparation for other inspections of equipment, uniforms, and the facility.
100% attendance is not expected, but attendance is very important and fines are levied for missed events. Joining the troop is a life-changing commitment.
One full-time week of Annual Training is mandatory each summer, usually held the first week in August.
Q: Can you describe the financial commitment?
A: There is an annual membership fee of $100. Troopers are also required to purchase a variety of uniform items and other things.
Most troopers find that they spend between $500 and $1500 in the first year.
Q: How do I join?
A: Contact the officer in charge of recruiting and set up a meeting where all your questions will be answered and you'll have a
chance to view the troop and facility. You will then learn when the next
class is starting. The training process takes several months
There is terrific pride and camaraderie associated with membership in this historic, living organization. To learn more, please contact us!
